A modern wedding where colour and creativity collide – that’s how I’d describe the styling we created for Kerri & Ally on their big day. As a team, we went in all guns blazing, to create something truly unique and really personal to them. Like nothing guests had seen before.
From our very first exchange, I knew this was the job for us. Not because we’re the best wedding stylists out there, but because it just spoke our creative language – colour, colour and more colour. Oh and quirkiness too please. Kerri gave us a fantastic collection of images to inspire what she wanted and we evolved them to add the styling twists we love so much. A modern wedding with our vibrant non-traditional take, on colour and creativity.
The ceremony was held in the court yard at La Porte. This is already a beautiful space, so we just enhanced what was there. We also made sure that the styling touches could be re-used for the main event (in Kerri & Ally’s eyes) – their wedding reception at Baker Street Studios.
The brief for the reception was a stylish music festival vibe. Ally’s 10 member-strong band was the headline act. With this brief, it was never going to be a conventional reception.
This meant the styling could be super fun and we could really dial up the colour. Studio 1 at Baker Street Studios is the perfect ‘go nuts’ spot when you have your own band, but it’s a very large white studio. With only 80 guests, we had to make sure that the features we added were on a large scale, to fill the space.
Cue 30 custom painted milk crates that we made into giant stack in the middle of the studio. A fun and frivolous way to feature the guest’s seating chart (which was also the size of a small house!).
The more traditional elements included a 3m long hanging floral creation that was an explosion of colour. It included custom painted foliage backdrop with pops of matching florals, layered on top. To add more colour depth, we also embedded twists of bright velvet into the piece. This was a monster to make and took about two months of painting and two test runs to perfect.
For the table styling we really went all out to add the unexpected. We styled them with things like speckled baby eggplants and guava. Making clusters of colour and creativity. Details were important too. Our wax dripping candles from Hall of Flame were custom made, so they dripped our exact colour palette throughout the night.
Kerri and Ally were super stars at putting their faith in us for their wonderfully modern wedding. Even when it was difficult at times to show them what we were thinking. Pinterest if great for inspiration, but we always like to add our own twist and colourful style.
